Hello again

Tina McInerney

I have decided not to to worry about catching up on the last 4months and just start again here. We are Vienna for a week having arrived Wednesday night. We flew into Vienna and took a taxi to the apartment. The taxi driver drove pretty quick - Dad was a bit nervous - actually, I was too - but if we were going to have an accident it was going to be in a nice car - a Mercedes Benz. All the taxis were the same.

We have a great apartment in the middle of the old town. We are on the Judenplatz, in the centr of which is a memorial for the 65000 Jews killed in the 2nd world war. Memorials here are huge - something about Europeans doing things on a large scale.

Our first night was pretty quiet - actually, all our nights are! We found a very old - huge place, old fashioned restaurant 2 doors away and had some tea there. The next morning, we were up and out looking for a supermarket to buy some breakfast stuff. After breakfast, we headed into town to the TI for the usual sheafs of brochures and maps. We sat down in a very old cafe to work out a plan.

We decided to visit Schloss Schonbrunn about 10 mins by tube out of town. It was the summer palace for the Hapsburgs - huge place 1144 rooms although the maximum you can visit is 40. Pretty sumptuous. There were magnificent gardens and the first owners were very gracious and allowed the public to use them from the start. There were all sorts of different types of gardens with ponds that were nearly iced over with the ducks walking on water. We had a beautiful walk around and then headed back into town. We were walking so not far along, we came across the TechnicL Museum. Dad decided to stop and explore that whilst I went off to my technical museum - a fabric store - and would you believe it, I didn't buy anything! I decided that I probably had enough to keep me going!

We met up in town and stopped at the sausage stand and had a delicious sausage with lots of lovely mustard and horseradish - it really cleared the head! I headed off home then via a cake shop - the best cakes here! And Dad dropped into the casino which he found a bit disappointing - he had to register and they had his name from when we were last here in 2008!

We did pop down to the pub next door but one and had a drink. And here we are up again at 5.30 to catch the train to Graz. It is 2.5 hours south of Vienna hence the early start. We wanted to go for a train ride through the mountains and see some snow. This train goes through the Semmering pass which is UNESCO listed - the first pass built though mountains.

On the train home now from Graz. We had a great walk around the historic centre. It is also unesco- listed and it is rather lovely with winding streets full of Renaissance style buildings and a magnificent cathedral. It made our trip worthwhile - we saw lots of Austrian countryside and a beautiful town.

That is it for now. Love to all. Mum xxxx

[Attachment(s) from Tony McInerney included below] Hello All

With a great Christmas behind us and a 12 day excursion ahead of us next week to Vienna and Budapest, I thought i had better document a bit of recorded trivia/nonsense

1.Christmas first…..We had a lovely Christmas time with the UK end of the family. As I mentioned in BNP no 7, Christmas is such a big deal over here…everyone has house lights ( which get good exposure because its dark by about 4.00 pm), the radio stations have wall to wall Christmas carols ( I never knew there were so many different Christmas songs/carols). In Romsey village we had Christmas street parade one night, then a week later we had a Christmas lantern parade, then the monday before Chrismas we had Christmas carols in the town square. Each event is attended by 100’s of locals. It is interesting that Christmas was banned by the Puritans and in one part of the UK, christmas was not a public holiday until 1958...

  1. Who likes Brussel Sprouts?? Well if you don’t like them don’t come here….they are staple diet ….Supermarket shelves are full go them.

3.At Riversdale we are completely spoilt with the standard of the course. Occasionally we get a bit of casual water but thats it…Over here Romsey GC has not had all 18 holes open since early Dec…currently we have only 9 holes open... 1 to 3 then 11 to 14 and 17 and 18….and Romsey is a very hilly course. In the immediate area there is only one club that had all 18 holes in play at the moment….Alresford GC. I played there last friday ..parts of it were still wet and muddy by Riversdale standards, but it was good to play 18 holes..(just an honest 34 points)

To deal with the mud and wet, Clubs encourage players to carry their clubs, but if that is not possible, your trolley(buggy) has to have “winter treads’ clipped over your wheels…see below. This requirement applies to both pull and electric buggies

One course near Southampton, Stoneham GC, is a 36 hole club…only 8 open at the moment… Golf shops also sell Golf BOOTS as well as golf shoes

4.Jermy Corbyn is a bit of a controversial leader of the Opposition in the UK. He often seems to get press coverage for all the wrong reasons, but I thought his recent appointment of a Shadow Minister for Livestock and Agriculture was a bit quirky…she is a Vegan!!

  1. I not sure whether this is one is just for my generation…..have you heard the saying so and so was sent to Clink (prison) for a felony? If so where did the term come from? Well after a long walk along the Thames recently from Westminster to Tower Bridge, I came across the answer. The HM Clink Prison is located just near the famous Globe theatre and was used to detain London villains from 1144 until 1780….(Not sure why all prisons over here have HM in front of the name for His/Her Majesty)

  2. As you know, we are heading to Vienna and Budapest for a couple of weeks …leaving Gatwick on wednesday…I have already learnt one thing about Budapest…is is really two towns Buda and Pest, one each side of the Danube. I sure all you good students would have known that from school days but Im a slow learner….

7 Some observations about TV sports coverage over here…first there are as many lead female commentators as men whatever the sport. Second observation…Darts and Snooker get prime time coverage

8 KIDS KORNER

Q What is the fastest cake in the world? A Too late .It's scone. Q. What do santa’s little helpers learnt school? A The elf-a-bet Q. What do they sing at a snowman birthday? A. Freeze a jolly good fellow Q What is a computers first sign of old age? A. Loss of memory 9. One for golfers…

One sunny Sunday morning, Mick Mc was beginning his pre-shot routine, visualizing his upcoming shot, when a loud voice come over the loudspeaker at Thurgoona GC..”Would the gentleman on the ladies tee please come back up to the mens tee”. Mick remained in his routine preparing to hit the ball and seemingly unfazed by the interruption. The loud speaker again…a little louder “Would the man on the ladies tee kindly come back to the mens tee” Mick had had enough. He turned towards the Clubhouse announcer and shouted “Would the announcer kindly shutup and let me play my second shot!

…i had better go after that..

Dad/Tony

Week 7.

Tina McInerney

We have been here for 5 months now so it must be about week 20 and I haven’t written since week 6! My excuse is that we have been rather busy and by the end of the day, I sit and play freecell or read my book or knit which I seem to unpick more than I knit!. I will try to do a bit of a catch-up a week at a time.

Week 7

starting where I left off on August 16. Sunday morning, Tony and Andy arrived home from Brighton early - had a pleasant time, I believe.

August 17 - Monday was a trip to Winchester. I had to buy a pair of flat shoes for the wedding. I tried on the outfit with the shoes and realised that I couldn’t stand in them because of the ankle. It was a successful trip as I found something to suit - always a worry when you have something specific in mind.

August 18 - a trip to Southampton - probably a visit to Ikea as Claire was getting organised for the christening and you can’t have a party without buying serviettes from Ikea! There was also the purchase of a canvas gazebo for the deck. The forecast was the rain to tip down so we thought we should take some precautions - this was after much discussion.

August 19 - Just for a change, Dad and I drove over to Salisbury to visit ‘Wilton House’, another magnificent house belonging to an earl who is dire straits and needs to charge for people to visit his house. He has a rather large collection of supercars and vintage cars - not sure why he can’t sell those after all, most people trade in their cars when they get new ones!

August 20 - I don’t have anything for this os must have had a quiet day getting organised for the next week. Dad may have played golf

August 21 - and Dad did play golf today as it was a Charity Day for an organisation called CAFOD - it is the official Catholic Aid agency for England and Wales. A fellow from the church organised it. There was dinner at the club afterwards and I went along to that.

August 22 - Preparations for the christening - I think I made sausage rolls.

August 23 - The Christening and Claire’s birthday - the rain came tipping down! We went to church at St Swithin Wells - a charming little church in Halterworth, the next village to Romsey. A beautiful ceremony with Abigail behaving just as she should and looking very cute in her white lace dress. The dress was worn by Claire when she was baptised - 40 years ago - nearly to the day! and made by my grandmother who was my dad’s mother. The hat was made by Claire the day before - true to her mother’s form. The rain did stop and the sun came out - we needed the gazebo for shade! It was a lovely afternoon.

August 24 - and Tony and I travelled over to Rye for the wedding. We travelled over on the A272 - so picturesque with a stop at Petersfield - it was raining that day so not much point in walking about so we kept going to Rye. We did a bit of a recce of the town and bought some supplies.

August 25 - off to London where it was still raining - I really can’t remember too much of what we did?? We were staying in Daniel’s hotel in Leicester - Oh yes, Tony met up with Brother Richard and had a bit of a wonder around and I went off to look at something else - probably Liberty and a fabric shop I discovered which sells remnants - they are my go-to shops these days. I met up with Tony and Richard at a pub called ‘Lamb and Flag’ - only built in 1772 but it was a favourite of Charles Dickens. Off to the lovely hotel for an early morning.

August 26 - we met Daniel at the airport at 6am and took the suitcases he brought with him with all my wool and spare sheets and towels. Daniel went off to town and we headed down the road back to Rye. We were looking for breakfast but it was too early anywhere. We called into a National Trust village - Chiddingstone Village - it was just one street with a pub and a few houses built in the Tudor style - very pretty. Nothing open there so we went on to Lewes to have breakfast at a cafe called Bill’s - which turns out to be almost a chain! No complaints though as we had a delicious breakfast and a great cup of coffee! We had a bit of a look through the town then on to visit another Trust House - Monk’s house. It was the holiday house of Virginia Woolfe. the village was quintessential with thatched roofs and climbing roses. The houses was relatively small but interesting to know that this is where she lived and relaxed with her friends. I have read a couple of her books which I didn’t really like. and then on to Rye.

I will stop there and hope to get back to it later this week.

love to all mum xxx

Thanks!

Hi everyone

I had my birthday style session at John Lewis last week, which was great. Bought loads and got some good tips - the best one being that it is very handy to have someone to run about and get you different sizes, stockings etc. Thank you so much, really a lovely thing to do.

And thanks for Abi's presents - the backpack was just what we needed for starting at the childminders, the jammies are super cute, the books are great, the snowsuit perfect, the picture is gorgeous and the shelf is so sweet. She is thoroughly spoilt.

Hello All

Full tour report is STILL in production, buy here are a few more bits of nonsense…

  1. Golf England this year are pushing women’s membership as part of their strategic plan. They have appointed a couple of “ambassadors” to promote the initiative. One is an attractive BBC TV breakfast presenter. Her name ..NAGA Munchetty. (Non golfers might need to seek an explanation from a golfer)

  2. The following revelation is posted on the wall of Horse Guards Arch…

  3. Leaving aside all the obvious comments about our trip to Paris, one unusual experience was riding on tube trains with no drivers.

  4. If new building activity is any indication of the heath of an economy, then London is in absolute boom times. The amount of new building in the City and in the surburbs is incredible.

  5. For racing people…..one day last week there were 4 race meetings in UK - 28 races in all. Of the 28 races, 24 were over jumps!!! …and there was an Amateur riders race at each meeting.

  6. Australians are going to have to smarten up…the poms have the world heavy weight boxing champ, the Davis Cup, the formula 1 champ, the ashes and so it goes on. The sports writers over here are having a field day.

  7. Its 150 days since we left Melb shores. We have spent 90 days in Romsey town and 60 days elsewhere

8.Finally, a few comments from the Daily Tele about some of the countries who will compete in the European soccer championships:

Albania is one of only 3 European countries without a McDonalds Belgium produce over 800 different beers Czech republic are the heaviest consumers of beer The English drink more tea than any other country. Two of the worlds smallest countries are inside Italy’s borders - San Marino and the Vatican Northern Irelands most spoken minority language is ???? - (you can 10 guesses and you won’t get it) Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world after Chinese Sweden pays students 120 pounds per month to attend high school

….I am sure that you are all much wiser now..

Cheers Dad/Tony

BTW you would have all guessed that Mandarin is the second language in northern Ireland !!!
