[Attachment(s) from Tony McInerney included below] Hello All
With a great Christmas behind us and a 12 day excursion ahead of us next week to Vienna and Budapest, I thought i had better document a bit of recorded trivia/nonsense
1.Christmas first…..We had a lovely Christmas time with the UK end of the family. As I mentioned in BNP no 7, Christmas is such a big deal over here…everyone has house lights ( which get good exposure because its dark by about 4.00 pm), the radio stations have wall to wall Christmas carols ( I never knew there were so many different Christmas songs/carols). In Romsey village we had Christmas street parade one night, then a week later we had a Christmas lantern parade, then the monday before Chrismas we had Christmas carols in the town square. Each event is attended by 100’s of locals. It is interesting that Christmas was banned by the Puritans and in one part of the UK, christmas was not a public holiday until 1958...
- Who likes Brussel Sprouts?? Well if you don’t like them don’t come here….they are staple diet ….Supermarket shelves are full go them.
3.At Riversdale we are completely spoilt with the standard of the course. Occasionally we get a bit of casual water but thats it…Over here Romsey GC has not had all 18 holes open since early Dec…currently we have only 9 holes open... 1 to 3 then 11 to 14 and 17 and 18….and Romsey is a very hilly course. In the immediate area there is only one club that had all 18 holes in play at the moment….Alresford GC. I played there last friday ..parts of it were still wet and muddy by Riversdale standards, but it was good to play 18 holes..(just an honest 34 points)
To deal with the mud and wet, Clubs encourage players to carry their clubs, but if that is not possible, your trolley(buggy) has to have “winter treads’ clipped over your wheels…see below. This requirement applies to both pull and electric buggies
One course near Southampton, Stoneham GC, is a 36 hole club…only 8 open at the moment… Golf shops also sell Golf BOOTS as well as golf shoes
4.Jermy Corbyn is a bit of a controversial leader of the Opposition in the UK. He often seems to get press coverage for all the wrong reasons, but I thought his recent appointment of a Shadow Minister for Livestock and Agriculture was a bit quirky…she is a Vegan!!
I not sure whether this is one is just for my generation…..have you heard the saying so and so was sent to Clink (prison) for a felony? If so where did the term come from? Well after a long walk along the Thames recently from Westminster to Tower Bridge, I came across the answer. The HM Clink Prison is located just near the famous Globe theatre and was used to detain London villains from 1144 until 1780….(Not sure why all prisons over here have HM in front of the name for His/Her Majesty)
As you know, we are heading to Vienna and Budapest for a couple of weeks …leaving Gatwick on wednesday…I have already learnt one thing about Budapest…is is really two towns Buda and Pest, one each side of the Danube. I sure all you good students would have known that from school days but Im a slow learner….
7 Some observations about TV sports coverage over here…first there are as many lead female commentators as men whatever the sport. Second observation…Darts and Snooker get prime time coverage

One sunny Sunday morning, Mick Mc was beginning his pre-shot routine, visualizing his upcoming shot, when a loud voice come over the loudspeaker at Thurgoona GC..”Would the gentleman on the ladies tee please come back up to the mens tee”. Mick remained in his routine preparing to hit the ball and seemingly unfazed by the interruption. The loud speaker again…a little louder “Would the man on the ladies tee kindly come back to the mens tee” Mick had had enough. He turned towards the Clubhouse announcer and shouted “Would the announcer kindly shutup and let me play my second shot!
…i had better go after that..
