Bits n Pieces 11
Hello All
The trivia store is nearly full again…with broken arms and minus 6 degree temperatures in cloudless skies..Those people who were very unkind to me about no Kids Korner in BnP No 10 will be overjoyed to know its back…
1. Big recent discovery last week! The great fire of London which destroyed 13000 buildings/houses in the City go London in 1666 did not start in Puddings Lane!!! It started in Tommy Farriner’s bakery which was 20 yards east of Pudding Lane
How on earth that was discovered only last week is a bit mind boggling..
2. A men’s gadget shop in Southampton with an interesting name …”Men Kind”
3. I see commentator Denis Cometti has announced his retirement. His description of Liberatore going fearlessly into a pack will be quoted many times …”…he entered the pack optimistically and emerged misty optically"
4. What do you do with a 14th Century Church when it is no longer needed?
Turn it into a Pizza shop!!
5. “Man blames fate for other accidents that befall him, but takes full responsibility for a hole in one”
6. Not trivia….but I have not spoken to one person who thinks Uk should stay in the EU. I think Mr Cameron has an impossible job to get a YES vote at the referendum
7. BTW I have had to report another B n B to BASL…..Our B n B in Wells last weekend provided a thick heavy donna to go with the 22 degree air con...
8. Like any good tourist, I think I must have been into more than a thousand old churches/cathedrals over here in Uk and Europe over the years.
But I learnt something new at Wells Cathedral last weekend. You would have seen churches with those special pews located up near the altar …placed long-ways instead of across the church like the pews for the normal congregation. Those special seats are used by cantors (and others) to lead the singing etc. I thought that area of the of church was called the “Choir”. …wrong its the “Quire”…..silly me
9. For any of you thinking of building a new house, you should consider a solid Oak frame made of huge timbers..
...different way of doings things…and it seems to be an emerging trend over here
10. A little town called Cheddar in the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset is famous for more than just breaking Australian arms…It is where cheddar cheese was born in the 12th century. The story goes that in 1170, King Henry 11 likes it so much he ordered 10,240 pounds of the cheese at one farthing per pounds.
I thought Kraft invented it in that nice blue packaging you can get at the supermarket…
11. I see A B de Villiers - South African Cricket Captain - has just made another 100, this time against England. His cricket records are amazing, but the other parts of his life are also incredible:
- he was a member for Junior National Hockey squad.
- he was a member of Junior National Football (soccer) squad.
- he captained the South Africa Junior Rugby side.
- he held six South African school swimming records.
- he has the fastest 100-meter time in South Africa Junior Athletics.
- he was a member of South Africa Junior Davis Cup Tennis Team.
- he was a National Badminton U-19 Champion.
- he received a national medal from Mandela for a science project.
- in 2010, he released a music album named “Maak Jou Drome Waar” (Make Your Dreams Come True), and
- He plays golf of a scratch handicap !!
When he retires from cricket, I assume he will become a brain surgeon ??
