This year Bernie and I decided to treat the kids to a traditional Melbourne Cup at the pub.
Guess who picked the winner (hint: It wasn't Bernie or the kids)!

We had a lovely day yesterday for Abigail's birthday lunch. And the sun shone in October! It was so warm we sat outside - in October!!
We're off to a joint birthday party for Abi and 7 of her friends all born around the same time. Should be mayhem.

Hello All Its now 8 weeks since he last edition of B n P….my excuse is that I have been waiting for "the mother “ to deliver the “proper” update…she tells me its under production.
Anyhow some more of the quirky observations…in no particular order
1.In the mother's book titled “notes from the small Island” the author makes fun of the small parking spaces in the UK. Well it not funny. When we were in London with Andrew and Monica, we parked in a carpark off Regent St and we had to climb in and out of the cars thro the back seat.. not even Georgie would have been able to get in and out the front seat !!!!…and its not just London. Even my slim self?? struggles to get in and out of our car in the local Waitress carpark.
Why can’t one but string tea bags in the UK!!!!
Im not sure whether this made headlines in Aust but it should have…a single German soccer league player in the Bundesleague (not the right spelling) scored 5 goals in 9 minutes. This is equivalent to James Hird kicking 20 goals in a quarter …( perhaps I should have used a another example…but the point remains..)
While on an incredible sporting note, Usain Bolts’ performance at the world championships must be one of the greatest of ALL time. (God I hope he is clean…)
I can’t believe how big Rugby is in this part of the world. If Aust gets beaten on Sat I wont be able to go to the golf course for a couple weeks… somehow I’m know as the boy from Oz. (BTW I think its a great pity that one of the UK teams did not make the last four. How on earth England put them selves in the hardest group in beyond belief.
On more important matters, the refugee crisis over here is shattering….imagine one country agreeing to take in 800, 0000 refugees in one year. That's what Germany is doing. Whats happening in north Africa is absolutely tragic…
On a lighter note, I followed an elderly female driver in Southampton recently. Someone forgot to tell her that modern cars have electric indicators. She was still was still hand signals to stop and turn right…her arm must get very cold in winter
My barber shop over here has got it all…including a snooker table to use while we are waiting. ( Mind you I have decided to try a grow some hair to keep warm during winter.)
One of the nicest little pubs here in Romsey is called “The Olive tree”. Last week there was a sign outside the pub saying that the STUPID manager had forgotten to re-new the hotel licence and would be unable to serve alcohol for al least 8 days!!! The sign welcomed clients to come and enjoy their food and bring their own grog. The note was signed “ Manager”…
The last one for now …some of the town/village names over here are fantastic… Today on the way back from our weekend in and around the beautiful village of Dartmouth, we drove past a village called “Cricket St Thomas”. BTW we did three magnificent walks - 4 to 6 miles each. But boy were they steep…Ive skin off my nose from walking up some of the hills and the backside of my jeans are shredded from some the down hill stretches…..
Cheers Dad/Tony

Hi All
Just thought I’d add my two bob’s worth to Emma’s previous sentiments and to let you all know a little bit of what has been happening aside from Mum and Dad’s Gap Year!
As Emma alluded to, we had the very best day. You couldn’t have scripted a better day and we certainly enjoyed the whole weekend! Thank you all for making the long trip to come and celebrate with us, it means so very much!
Of course we missed those who couldn’t get there, but it the movie you guys put together was incredible! We’ve watched it a few times now and it makes us smile… and tear up every time so thank you for putting it together. It’s amazing how tuned in our nieces and nephews are, sometimes kids just get it! Sam should be quoted at every wedding from here on in.
Bernie, your speech was possibly the best thing you’ve ever done… I’m pretty sure you had some help typing it and Paul delivered it very well but I really appreciated your thoughts on the day. It wouldn’t have been quite right without your say…
Matt, thanks again for acting as MC, you did a great job on a pretty ad hoc running sheet and I’m happy to say most of your gags went down really well.
Thanks for the love and support from all of you over the journey so far, I (we) really appreciate it and we’ll never forget we have it from you all.
Here’s a little highlights package from our video of the day. We hope you like it… we do. Matt or Paul, is there anyway to get this on the blog? We’ve got a longer DVD that we’ll be sending to OZ for you all to have a movie night…

In other news, we’ve taken delivery of the BBQ and Coffee machine you all put in for. They are both sensational! The coffee machine is getting plenty of good use already and the BBQ is going to! We had a slight stock issue with John Lewis so we ended up with a slightly different model but it’s unreal and I can’t wait to starting burning the chicken on it when Dad is next around! Thanks for the pressies!
The other news is that I’m getting a new car! It’s a Renault Megane Sports Tourer GT something or other… Cool huh!? It comes with my new job as UK Marketing Manager for Liberon - a wood finishing paint supplier from the South of France. I’ve just received the official offer where the biggest sticking point was not money or pension fund (it pays both of those) but which car they thought would satisfy me! Anyway I start on Monday week and will have a couple of trips to the head office in France (about 60 miles from Geneva) to kick it off! Not bad! I’m looking forward to getting stuck in to it.
Alright, I’ve gotta run, we’re off to a B&B in the countryside this weekend near Lewes.
I hope everyone is going good back in OZ, we’ll FaceTime you all soon!
Much Love Dommy
